Probiotics for the WIN!!

Just like that, cold and flu season have arrived! I can’t think of anyone who enjoys being sick. One of the best things I’ve done for my overall health is start taking a daily probiotic. Unless you live on a pure kombucha & yogurt diet, chances are excellent that you could benefit from adding a probiotic supplement.

The modern diet (overload of sugar and processed foods and wide spread use of antibiotics) has damaged most everyone’s gut flora. An unbalanced gut can be linked to all kinds of maladies, such as digestive issues, weakened immune system, skin problems, and low energy. When your gut bacteria is out of whack, it’s easy for yeast to flourish and take over, which leads to SUGAR CRAVINGS. Such a vicious cycle. It can also lead to skin issues! I’m convinced that my MELASMA situation happened due to this gut imbalance and gluten allergy. Did you read about how INFLAMMED MY SKIN WAS because of my diet? Who knew I’ve been allergic to gluten for so long.  Thank goodness I figured it out, but I panicked!! After you read this check out SKIN CARE MUST HAVES. This post will help you find what you need to be using.

Here’s a really general overview of probiotics and few kinds I have tried and liked.

1. Make sure the probiotic you are taking has at least 40-50 billion CFUs per serving.

2. Look for “strain diversity”.. this means you want a formula that contains more than four different strains.

3. Do some research ahead of time. If you struggle with bowel issues, look for strains such as L. acidophilus, L. casei, or L. plantaru

4. Be prepared for a bit of “die off”. As you crowd out the bad bacteria and yeast with the new strains, sometimes you will experience die off. This can manifest as stomach cramping or even cold or flu-like symptoms.

5. Make sure you rotate your probiotics. I try to switch kinds every 4-6 months. Extra points if you can get your kids to take them!

Some kinds I’ve tried and liked:

RENEW LIFE  has some really great products. I def recommend this one.

FIVELAC  is another good one!

KIDS PROBIOTIC GUMMIES – my kids take these every single morning.

I know some of you drink kombucha and love it. Some people avoid it due to religious reasons. It’s a great way to help with gut health and overall health if you can handle the taste of it.

Let me know what other probiotic brands you use!

SUPPLEMENTS, DEFICIENCIES & HORMONE BALANCE

As far as what SUPPLEMENTS for more SKIN HEALTH:

During the Neutrogena University class last week a few doctors talked about supplements and the ones actually necessary for skin health. These listed below were recommended. I already take them  except one! I like the brand “now” and “Solgar” – (was recommended by myNaturopathic doctor). I take these at night right before bed

Also you can easily get your blood work done to determine if you are deficient on any vitamins, minerals or irregular with your hormones. I went to a holistic doctor and she ran all my tests and blood work. Just google “Naturopathic doctor” near me. These doctors specialize in treating women’s health. I thought my hormones were going to be so imbalanced but after we ran all the tests it was my gut health and nutritional deficiencies from my gluten allergy (celiacs) finally catching up to me. Now they help monitor me and make sure I’m super on top of my health progress. It’s been a bout a two year process. I also did a colonoscopy and endoscopy.

VIT C – I take this in PILL form at night or suck on these CHEWABLE TABLETS.

B COMPLEX

OMEGA 3’s

COenzyme Q10

ZINC 30mg

PYCNOGENAL – is the one I didn’t know about. I just ordered.

I also take VITAMIN D because I’m deficient.

On another note, I went to Free People a few weeks ago and can’t stop wearing this KNIT V SKIRT (in more colors). I love it in GREY too! So cute with a knotted white tee and I’m crazy about this cropped denim jacket. Check it out below.

  2. Love your blog and all your tips!
I take Flora probiotics, they are made with human strands instead of animal strands. (I’ve heard the human strands will actually stay around and multiply)
Thanks for the tips of changing it up every couple months!
