Real mom:Heidi Powell + giveaway

Have you ever watched your neighbor open her mailbox because the muscles in her arm as she turns the key stop you in your tracks? You would if your neighbor was Heidi Powell! In the bootcamp class I teach we like to joke that everyone stands a little taller, jumps higher and lunges deeper when we know Chris or Heidi are outside. Myself included!

Tell us about your background:
I was born in Flagstaff, AZ, and grew up in Mesa, AZ.  Went to Mountain View HS (Go Toros!) and attended Arizona State University.  My first job is taking care of our three wonderful children!  Currently I run a private bootcamp for Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition and coach individuals alongside my husband.

Husband: Chris Powell
Chris is a trainer and the host of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. We always say we do NOT like to think of ourselves as husband/wife, but instead as best friends. We had actually never planned to marry – we were scared of ruining our best friendship . Luckily, marriage has worked out well for us ;). When we find ourselves at each other’s throats (we are normal people!), we remind each other that we are friends first. How would we treat and talk to our best friend? Works like a charm and is the secret to our one-of-a-kind union!

Children:
Matix, 7, SUCH a boy, he is. Loves riding his Razor and being outside, has an obsession with Skylanders, and could eat only carbs if I let him ;). He’s my little bookworm (just like mommy!), and such a sweet, sweet boy.
Marley, 6, my little gymnast (with muscles way too big for her size!) loves fashion, design, protein and veggies! Loves to workout alongside Mom. She’s my buddy.
Cash, 20 months, my sweet little maniac . He loves wearing one sock and can destroy everything in site…with full parental supervision! He’s amazing and melts my heart.

Tell us about your business. How you got started, why?
Gosh, it is all such a blur! Let’s see…I have a background in business (10 years personal experience and family business). A little while into Chris’ and my friendship, we realized he needed help badly. This was right after he had moved out of his car…and we knew if someone didn’t step in, he was well on his way back there! He was being pulled in so many directions, and would literally give EVERYTHING he had to anyone in need. Such a kind heart and a wonderful quality to give endlessly, but Chris needed to be saved from himself! I started by helping him manage his businesses, while we dreamed up transformation tools and programs on the side. A while later, he was approached to help develop a show (with him as the star trainer) for a CA-based production company, and naturally I helped out with this. When the show was in production, Chris became even more spread-thin and realized he couldn’t coach 8 people through the biggest year of their life alone. Coaching was easy for me, since I’ve been a certified trainer since my late teens (LA Fitness, baby), and have learned from quite a few of my own struggles in life. Before I knew it, we were co-transforming 8 lives in season 1, 8 more in season 2, and now 16 lives in Season 3! Crazy whirlwind, I’ll tell ya. In the process, these 32 people have transformed our lives as well . Last year we teamed up with a company, Vemma, to design convenient products and programs for people on the journey of transformation.  It has been so fulfilling, finally offering people the tools they need to make the process easier!

First thing you do in the morning:
Starbucks.  Nothing happens until I get my Starbucks! My kids know my drink so well, they mimic me as I order. After I get the kids ready and off to school, that is ;). I order a grande iced coffee with one pump of mocha (chocolate sauce). It gives me 165mg caffeine to sip on throughout the day for sustained energy, with only 25 calories total.

Describe your personal style:
My husband says ‘hippie chic’, but I think what he means is ‘unfashionable’ . I’m so happy he sees a style in my lack of style. I would call my personal style classic. I like pieces and things that will be good for years to come – I rarely ever have time to shop, so I need stuff that will endure the test of time!

How you stay fit:
However and whenever I can! Before the kids wake up, nap time, or after they go to bed is my preference. If these times don’t work on a particular day, we have a family workout!
We have a small gym in our garage with a squat rack, Olympic barbells, bumper plates, pull up bar and rings, dumbbells etc.  Most of our workouts are high intensity...crossfit style.  A typical workout ranges from 10 to 20 minutes, with a 5 minute warm up and cool down.  When the kids are around, we stick with body weight for safety.

Number one beauty item:
Right now, Chapstick. There is nothing worse than less than moist lips. I carry it with me everywhere. I try to keep a Lancome Juicy Tubes Lipgloss with me too to add some color/shine.

Favorite healthy snack:
Almonds are my ‘go to’ snack for everything.  They’re loaded with healthy fats, protein, and fiber.  They really are one of nature’s miracle foods! Bonus – my kids love them too.

Guilty pleasure:
Starbucks Zucchini Walnut muffins.  I have one every day in the morning. “Yeah right,”  you think. Seriously. One thing I have learned is that we are all different – some of us require weekly Reward Days, some require every-other-day Reward Meals. I require daily Reward Muffins! It satisfies any and all physiological, mental and emotional cravings, and keeps me eating extremely clean for the rest of the day.

Children's item you can't live without:
iPad. I can’t even imagine how all of this travel would be possible without one!

Tip or trick your mom taught you that have applied to yourself:
Always, always, always wear suncreen. Thanks, Mom!

Favorite tradition:
Chris and I are not much of toy-buyers for the kids, but I have to say that my favorite tradition is Chris’ “surprise gift giving” after he returns home from a trip. It’s not about giving the kids a toy or a gift, it’s about enjoying the anticipation, laughter, and fun that comes with the tradition of our family reuniting. He has brought the kids home a surprise from every single trip he has ever taken. That’s a lot of trips!

How you spend your "me" time:
I’m a workaholic. If I have time alone, nothing makes me feel better than clearing (or trying to clear) my inbox. It’s a never-ending, but exciting, battle.

Favorite motivational quote:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented and fabulous?

Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other
people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of
 God that is within us.

It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
 we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,

Our presence automatically liberates others.

  47. Hello Heidi Powell, my name is Soraya and I am 45 years old, I have two daughters, Victória 14 almost 15 years old and Thais T. Vidal, 18 years completed in the last day 09 when she was already in Saanich, Canada where is doing exchange. Thais have bought supplements and enrolled in an academy where do physical activities. She loves. She is afraid of getting fat in this period there because the food there is very different here in Brazil. As for me, I need and want to lose weight about 6 pounds to feel me better and healthier. I went through a hysterectomy at first day of february and I will be should remain at rest for some time.
I watched the program with your husband Chris Powell and I was impressed, I also want this for my life. As you believe, I also want to believe that I am powerful and brilliant show. I was born to make manifest the glory of God that is in me. From now on, I'm your follower and I want to know: Can I start experimenting whith their products? I hope so!! thank you so much!!!!

  59. I am a mom of 7. I also have a husband who is physically very bad off, and the doctors are not giving him much hope of getting better. I never have time for myself, but loved watching Home Improvement, Weight Loss Edition. It made me cry. I know I can't lay my life aside, to loose weight like some of those other shows that can loose 100 lbs. in 3 months. I home school, I have so much on my plate. Chris did motivate me to start with a realistic goal at the first of the year. I have started using my elliptical everyday, Mon.-Fri. so far this year, for 15 min. I have cut my food intake, probably by half. I am getting discouraged though. I have no energy, no weight loss, and I am at tears. I am beyond pressured to stop, but am trying to think about it all as if I were taking a pill, and I just need to take that medicine, no matter what. I need help. I need help. I need to be here for my kids. My blood pressure keeps going through the roof. I just need a miracle. :( I love the your story, and I love the heart that you show everyone. Not every fat person is sitting around with a bucket of fried chicken, and you know that. You and your husband are an encouragement to me. I would love to be able to look and feel better. I am at a loss. beverlyburnette7@gmail.com

Chris and Heidi are truly amazing people who are using their gifts and talents to make a difference in peoples lives. Their enthusiasm for life is contagious and inspiring.

I will be honest, I watch very little to no television as I do not have time and many of my days are 15 to 17 hours long between 2 jobs, school f/t (yes, at 48 yrs old you can do it!!), and 3 kids. I lost my parents last year as they each had different terminal illnesses. My mother watched much television and she called my one night and told me I should watch a show that showed people make huge transformations in their lives - she knew I felt so frustrated about my weight and myself and wanted me to have hope. I have seen the show a couple times and it did inspire me to make a change in my own life. I gained 80 pounds because I was so busy taking care of my parents (would drive 110 miles round trip several times a week), plus take my daughter to specialists at Phx Children's Hospital and Barrow's, as well as work and school.... PLUS I am a survivor of domestic violence. I have aged significantly and my hair has fallen out so much I have very little hair on top of my head. I remember how much my mom wanted me to slow down and take better care of myself and want to honor her, my daughters, and myself by changing what has gotten me where I am today.

I just graduated with honors and as a member of Phi Theta Kappa with 2 Associate degrees and certification (AAS Administration of Justice, AAS in Judicial Studies, and CCL in Victimology) and will graduate with my BS in December. I saw the protein shakes and wondered if those would be a good option for me as a meal replacement once or twice a day - it would be much easier as I am on the go so much. My 21 year old daughter told me last week that she is afraid of me dying like my mom did if I don't take better care of myself - after a good cry from realizing how much I let myself go, I scraped myself off the floor and am ready to make a change and do whatever it takes to get healthy. I can't help people if I am a mess myself!!

Again, Thank You for all you do!!

    Kathleen Carpenter

  75. Help! I haven’t lost the “baby” weight I gained and I am desperate …… the “baby” is 13-years-old. I can handle wrinkles, hair loss and “old” – what I can’t handle is FAT, ornery and feeling bad all the time. We eat lots of fruit and fresh veges at our place and NO ONE ELSE in my house is overweight. I exercised 1-2 hours daily for for 2 years ….. and GAINED 8 pounds. My friends tried to comfort me by telling me it was “muscle!” Another friend went with me to the gym and I think she was shocked when she couldn’t keep up with my fat a**.

I have attacks of Carb-insanity (eating “white”). I have tried some of my own diet ideas: You can eat whatever you can suck through a straw; eat the donut while exercising (counteracts the calories, right?); if NO ONE sees you eat it – it doesn’t count. I can’t skip meals, substitute protein shakes for a meal ("you won't be hungry" - but I always was) or eat lots of raw, green leafy stuff (I don’t digest it). I tried becoming a “vegen” for 12 days which left my joints sore and facing the very real possibility of changing my name to “SMELLidee” because of all the beans I was consuming as protein. I was not a fat child, nor a fat adult and it seems the 90 lbs of “more of me to love” attached itself in my early 40’s during and after my third pregnancy.

I am paying the price for the “bulletproof” attitude I had in my 20’s and 30’s. I have a bad knee and spondylolisthesis (that will need surgery eventually) so while I am limited to less “impactful” exercises, I can assure you that I work up a sweat and can outpress females less than half my age (yes, I have tried it).
